This American Life - an App for That

Here's a little thing that happened while we were otherwise occupied: This American Life released what is probably the coolest public media app too date.

Well, for shear across-the-board utility, that prize goes to the Public Radio Player. But PRX, which birthed the Player, partnered with TAL to create the new app, and you can see smart thinking with every swipe and poke of your iPhone's screen.

You can access the streaming audio for every single episode of the show, search for favorite episodes or contributors, check out the audio and video extras, even set a countdown so you won't miss the weekly live broadcast, Friday nights on Chicago Public Radio. Plus the basic appy goodness you expect: you can "favorite" particular shows, share those favorites on Facebook or twitter, and follow the blog.

How much are you going to pay? Well, in a break from most of the other apps created by public media, this one isn't free. It's $2.99, because the show isn't free either, you know? So your contribution supports the show.

Get the app. It's impressive.
